One Full Month

It's been one months since I started my juice fast.  I fasted for 15 days, then transitioned back to solid food, but have dedicated myself to a vegan/ mostly raw food diet.

A week ago I made the choice to go wheat free on the advice of a good friend who is studying to be a holistic nutritionist.  I had noticed that some of my negative health symptoms returned after my fast, and was a bit discouraged.  My friend Chantale asked me to be part of a case study for her, and after she analyzed all the survey forms I filled out, she said that there was a strong indication that I was gluten intolerant.  She explained what the symptoms were that indicated this, and I agreed that it seemed to be the case.  I volunteered to go Gluten free, and keep a food, and sleep journal.

It's been a week with no wheat, and all of my negative symptoms have disappeared.  I feel great.  Lots of energy, and much happier.  I started reading the book "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis, and it's really opened my eyes to a lot of information about modern wheat.  I would recommend it to everyone.

One month later stats: Weight: 160 lbs, waist 34" (at widest point, not my pant size), lots of energy, optimistic, and generally feeling good.

Day Fourteen

Today I started my transition back to solid food. Crystal made some awesome curry pumpkin soup. She put it through the food mill, so it's a little bit thicker than a pureed soup.  I had one bowl with cilantro sprinkled on top, and a little slice of whole wheat bread.  It was SO good.  I was going to go 15 days on just juice, but  we made reservations for the Vegan Tasting Diner event at Foia in Tecumseh on Thursday, so I wanted to be able to eat real food by then.  I will definitely take it slow.  I plan to eat fattoush for dinner tomorrow night.  It's still juice in the morning, and a big container of Mean Green to work.  The plan to start to bringing salad to work by the middle of the month.

Day Ten

I made it to my first goal.  I knew I could do it, but at times I was hating, and questioning the whole process.  Today was a snap.  Hardly any food cravings, and I felt good.  Stable, and alert with energy right from the start of the day.  We went shopping for more fruit, and then came back and made some juice.

Fruit Juice (for two)

1/2 a pineapple
a pint of blackberries
4 kiwis
2 apples
1 pear

The pectin in the berries made the juice nice and thick.  It was wonderful having something in my mouth that had some substance to it, and the the juice tasted amazing.

We made 2 big batches of Mean Green right after the fruit juice to save on clean up time.  Crystal had the idea of putting the vacuum top from the wine set right into the spout of my plastic work bottle, and it fit nicely and made a good seal.  With all the air pulled out of the bottle the juice would stay good in the fridge, and have minimal degradation until I left for work.

Day Nine

Woke up feeling good today.  This was Crystal's first official day on a juice fast.  She's been drinking a lot of juice with me, but still eating food, and drinking alcohol.  Today she gave it all up, and went just juice with me.  We started things off with a nice apple, orange, pear blend.  It got us going pretty quick.

I'm not sure exactly what she put in the second juice.  I had my son today, so I was spending time with him, while Crystal made the juice.  It had some beets in it though, that's for sure.

Crystal made me a big batch of Mean Green for work while I took a nap after dropping Kerwin off, and I brought that to work with me.

I have found my food cravings steadily decreasing.  I have more energy, but it drops fast if I don't juice at the right time.  I had origianlly planned to do 10 days on the juice fast, but I think I might extend it to 15 days now.  I would have never even considered the possibility of extending it a few days ago, but I'm in a much more positive mental, and emotional state now that the food cravings have decreased, and my body has adjusted to the just juice diet.  I figure the longer I do the juice diet the easier, it will be for me to adopt a vegan, or vegetarian diet once I'm back on food.

Day Eight

Week Two starting stats: Weight: 166 lbs, waist 36" (at widest point, not my pant size) not bad for one week.  I'm sure a fair bit of that was gone from all the bathroom visits, but I'm still happy with it.

Dumping that foul juice this morning was a bad idea.  I woke up today (this afternoon, since after a midnight shift I go right to bed) with a throbbing headache, and sugar crash.  Crystal said I looked sick, and I felt terrible.  We were almost out of ingredients, so I made a quick apple, carrot, beet juice.  After downing that I immediately felt better than I had.  Once I was better, we went to Joseph's Produce, and refilled our ingredients for a few days.  I then came home and decided to make another fruit juice to get my sugar, and energy back up.  I made it with 2 big oranges, 2 apples, and a Bosch pear.  It was yummy, and got me feeling good again

Finished the day off with A big batch of Mean Green that I took with me to work.  I had a bit of a bathroom emergency while at work and took an Imodium when I got back to the line.  After that I was fine.  I felt bad about taking the Immodium, but the alternative wouldhave been much worse.

Day Seven

Morning Juice

2 kiwis
3 apples
1 orange
4 stalks of celery

I think I may have reached something of a turning point today.  I really didn't think about food that much, and I started to feel better about the fast.  I felt very alert, and stable all day, although  I was a bit anxious about having to go back to work, and how I'd make it through the shift.  Crystal made the mid day juice.  I was so busy setting up our new internet connection, and the wireless router that I didn't even pay attention to it until I had a glass of juice in front of me.

I took a nap around 6:30pm, and got up at 10:00pm.  this gave me enough time to make some Mean Green, take a shower, and get ready for work.

I had no trouble making it through my shift.  I told one of the guys about my fast, and he became pretty vocal about how he thought vegetarians were stupid.  He was very oppsed to the whole idea (even bordering on hostile) and ended up walking away after a short rant.  After that I decided to keep my eating habits to myself at work.

Came home, and made some terrible juice that I couldn't drink, then went to bed exhausted, hoping that I'd sleep well.

Day Six

Had to get up early since we had a family event to go to. Made some juice, and ended up having to bring mine with me in the car.

Early Morning Juice (for two)

4 apples
4 stalks of celery
2 pears
1 large piece of ginger
a bag of carrots

This juice was really great, and gave me no problems at all.  Probably one of my favourite morning juices so far.

After the family event everyone went out for breakfast.  I had the choice of watching everyone eat, or going home by myself.  I chose the latter, and it was really hard for me.  My food cravings have been super annoying, and going out for breakfast is something I love to do.  I went home and moped for a few hours.

Crystal and her Dad came back to our place, and I started talking about "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" while I made some mid day juice.  I forgot exactly waht I put in it because I was distracted and forgot to mark it down.  We sat and drank our juice, and watched the movie again.  Crystal was hoping it might motivate me since I've been so down in the dumps without food.  As great as the movie is, it didn't make much difference in my mood this time around.

Evening Juice

1 apple
2 beets
4 carrots
1 piece of ginger
2 Swiss chard leaves

Crystal went out, and I ended up going to sleep early.
